10 Gospel Songs I Love

Hello everyone, hope your week is going fine. Just the other day, I was thinking about how songs can be helpful in one way or the other. I listen to music a lot and almost every song I have listened to, has a memory or an event surrounding it. Some are good, some are not so good. In all, good music can be comforting and helpful too.

I want to share with you guys some of the songs I really love and tell you why I love them or the memories these songs bring to me. There are a lot of songs but I had to make it 10. Maybe some other time I could say more. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

1. Come to Me by Jenn Johnson, Bethel Music

Bethel music is an American worship group from Redding, California. I heard about them for the first time in 2014 but they have been there since 2001 and they make great songs, of which one of them is “Come to Me”.

This song is so amazing. A friend shared this song with me and I never really listened to it until a few days after. That day I was in my hostel and at that period of time, I was feeling down spiritually. I was listening to music, my songs were on shuffle and this song came in.

“I am the lord your God, I go before you now, I stand beside you, I’m all around you”

Hearing those words gave me goose bumps and I just started crying, like that was what I needed to hear at that moment. I later found out the one I was listening to was the abridged version. Of course, I had to look for the full version and it is such a beautiful song.

2. Way Maker by Sinach

Sinach is a Nigerian gospel artiste. I’m sure most Nigerians have heard of her. “Way Maker” came out last year or so. It’s a nice song, but when it was all over the place, it just felt like a passive song to me. A passive song (per my definition) is a song you don’t exactly pay attention to but you know it and might even sing it well. It went from a passive song to a powerful song and confession in my final year first semester. I was really going through something and that song was like a reassurance. It was a confession, it was more than just a song.

3. It is well by Kristine DiMarco, Bethel Music

This is another song by the gospel group, Bethel Music. This song has the same chorus as the popular hymn “It is well” but the song is beautiful, from the beginning to the end. There’s no particular significant event with this song but I just like the song and the lyrics are heart-warming and encouraging too.

4. This God is too Good by Nathaniel Bassey, featuring Micah Stampley

“I know a God, who’s merciful and kind, faithful and gracious,

I’m the apple of His eyes, the thought that feels His heart,

Every morning, noon and night

He loved me when I didn’t care

And was patient till I came running back into his arms…”

Look at how lovely the lyrics are. Nathaniel Bassey is a Nigerian gospel artiste and Micah Stampley is an American gospel artiste.

“This God is too Good” just reminds you of God’s love and lets you know that no matter how filthy you think you are, you can always come back to Him. Sometimes, the devil uses guilt to draw us farther away from God when we do things that God wouldn’t approve because we think God would not welcome us. So we therefore live our lives like we don’t care. The truth is that, no matter what it is, it is that time that God expects you to ask Him for mercy and He will forgive you. The song also tells you of God’s goodness and His loving kindness. That is indeed lovely.

5. Tell the World by Lecrae, featuring Mali Music

The lyrics of this song makes one realize how far they have come with God by their side. Apart from the lyrics, the whole is just pleasant to the ears. Lecrae is an American Christian hip hop artist and Mali Music (Kortney Jamaal Pollard) is also an American singer.

6. Spreading Everywhere by Frank Edwards

Almost everyone in Nigeria has heard of Frank Edwards, if you are a Nigerian and haven’t heard of him, you must have heard the popular song “you too dey bless me o”.

“Spreading everywhere” is another song I like. Anytime I sing it, I sing it with passion. It’s like I’m prophesying into my life. The song brings to mind your identity in Christ.

7. Victory by Todd Dulaney

This song is currently popular and it’s a lovely song too. Todd Dulaney is an American artiste. There’s something with this song that just makes me happy and assured. Victory indeed belongs to Jesus.

8. No longer Slave by Jonathan David and Melissa Helsa, Bethel Music

I know, I know, it’s another Bethel Music song. I can’t help it, their songs are good. After listening to “Come to Me”, I downloaded more of their songs and “No longer slave” was one of them. So there are 2 versions of this song, the unadulterated and the revised one. Unadulterated in the sense that the song came as a result of pure worship. As if they knew the song was such a lovely song, they had to properly produce it, hence the revised one. The former is the one I listened to first and believe me, it was a great worship.

9. Faithful by Bob Fitts

Apart from the fact that this song holds powerful lyrics, my mom loves the song and I just can’t help but love it too. Just like the title of the song, the song speaks about the faithfulness of God. A part of the song goes…

“…when the sun, refuse to shine, and time is no more

You’ll still be faithful…”

Bob Fitts is an American gospel artiste and he’s been around for quite a while, even before I was born. Some of his songs that most people might know are “Peace” and “As we pray”.

10. Amazing by Dunsin Oyekan

The lyrics of this song ministered to me the first time I heard it. It was in church in one of our annual programmes. Dunsin was invited and when he sang this song, I couldn’t help but love it. Dunsin is a Nigerian artiste and he is a minister at COZA (Commonwealth of Zion Assembly).
